Take up cable stretch after the first rides

Skill level 1 of 4 · Home basicsAdjustEasy10 minCables and housing

Steel inner cables inside housing transmit lever and shifter pull to brakes and derailleurs. Brake housing is coil-wound (strong under compression); shift housing has lengthwise strands (precise length). Ferrules cap each housing end; barrel adjusters fine-tune tension. Friction from dirt, rust or kinks is the #1 cause of sloppy shifting and weak cable brakes.

Steps

  1. New cables and housing settle in over the first few weeks: brakes feel softer and shifts to bigger cogs get slow.
  2. Brakes: turn the barrel adjuster at the brake lever out (counterclockwise) a turn at a time until the lever is firm and stops well before the bar. Check the wheel still spins without rubbing.
  3. Gears: shift to the second-smallest cog. If the chain hesitates going to bigger cogs, turn the barrel adjuster at the shifter or derailleur out a quarter turn at a time until it shifts cleanly both ways.
  4. Out of adjuster? Screw the adjuster most of the way back in, loosen the cable anchor bolt, pull the slack through, and tighten the bolt to the torque on the part.
  5. Check every housing end sits fully in its stop and ferrule.
  6. Test ride: firm brakes, clean shifts in every gear.
