2x shifting and chainring care
Two front rings with a front derailleur: big ring for speed, small ring for climbing. Common on road, gravel and many hybrids (e.g. 50/34, 46/30, 36/22). The front derailleur pushes the chain between rings. The gap between the rings (e.g. 16 teeth on 46/30) plus your cassette range must fit the rear derailleur's total capacity. Avoid cross-chaining (big ring + biggest cog, small ring + smallest cog): it rubs and wears fast.

Steps
- Clean both rings with degreaser and a brush; check for bent, hooked or missing teeth.
- Check the ring bolts (current Shimano 12–14 Nm, small ring 16–17 Nm; alloy 1x bolts often 8–10 Nm; hold the nut on the back with a chainring nut tool or a hex key).
- Shift through every gear on the stand. If it drops off the inside, turn the front derailleur's L screw a quarter turn in; off the outside, the H screw.
- If it rubs in a cross-chained gear, that's normal: shift the other ring instead.
Torque
| Fastener | Torque |
|---|---|
| Chainring bolts | 12–14 Nm on current Shimano cranks (16–17 Nm small ring); check crank maker |
