Numb hands or sore wrists: causes and fixes

Too much weight on the hands, or wrists bent at an angle. Small setup changes help a lot.

Check it on your own bike

  1. Levers and grips at the wrong angle · Most likely

Wrists should be straight when you hold the grips and reach the levers.

Fix: Position grips, levers and shifter · Set brake/shift lever (hood) position

  2. Handlebar too low · Most likely

Raise the bar with spacers or flip the stem upward.

Fix: Flip stem or move spacers (bar height) · Raise or lower a quill stem

  3. Saddle tipped forward · Sometimes

A nose-down saddle slides you onto your hands. Level it.

Fix: Set saddle angle and setback

  4. Thin, hard grips · Sometimes

Ergonomic grips spread the pressure across your palm.

Fix: Replace grips · Wrap bar tape

  5. Tires pumped too hard · Sometimes

Over-inflated tires pass every bump to your hands. Use your weight-based pressure.

    Fix: Set tire pressure
