Knee pain: causes and fixes

Pain at the front of the knee usually means the saddle is too low; behind the knee, too high.

Check it on your own bike

  1. Saddle height wrong · Most likely

At the bottom of the stroke your knee should be slightly bent (about 25–35°).

    Fix: Set saddle height

  2. Saddle too far forward or back · Sometimes

With the cranks level, your knee should be roughly over the pedal axle.

Fix: Set saddle angle and setback

  3. Cleats twisted · Sometimes

Clipless: cleats should let your feet sit at their natural angle.

Fix: Install cleats and set tension
